Our School Dog
Hi, I’m Patch, and I’m the much-loved school dog at St Chad’s!
I’m a Beagle, and I belong to Mrs Kay, our lovely Welfare Officer. I get to come to school with her most days, where I help support our Nurture provision and play an important role in the emotional wellbeing of the children.
I have my very own special bed in Mrs Kay’s office, and to keep me safe, the school has fitted a stairgate to make sure I stay in my designated area. I don’t wander around the school unsupervised, and I always wear my lead when I’m moving through the building. I like to think of myself as a calming, friendly presence here at St Chad’s.
The Benefits of Having Me Around
I’m not just here for cuddles (though I do love those!)—I’m also here to help in lots of important ways. Research shows that having a school dog like me brings a range of benefits for children, and I’m happy to say I provide them all!
-
Emotional Benefits: I help improve self-esteem and lift spirits, often bringing a smile or a laugh to the children’s faces. I also help relieve anxiety and teach compassion and respect for all living things.
-
Cognitive Benefits: Spending time with me can help boost memory, problem-solving skills, and even make learning more fun! I love to be part of the games and activities that encourage positive engagement.
-
Social Benefits: I’m always a great conversation starter and encourage children to take responsibility and interact with each other. My presence helps promote a sense of wellbeing and strong social connections.
-
Physical Benefits: Spending time with me can reduce stress and even lower blood pressure. I encourage children to move, walk, and play, helping to keep them active and engaged.
-
Environmental Benefits: Having me around helps create a warm, family-like atmosphere at school, and the positive effects of my presence last well beyond the school day.
-
Reading Benefits: It’s true! Children love to read to me because I’m a great listener. I provide a calm and supportive environment, which helps children build their confidence and improve their reading skills. I don’t judge, and I’m always happy to hear a story!
If you’re feeling a little scared of me, that’s okay! Just let the office know, and we can work together to help you feel comfortable.
I’m very proud of the role I play in supporting our school’s Nurture provision. I love spending time with the children and helping them with their emotional and social development. I’m not just a pet—I’m a valued member of the St Chad’s family!
I look forward to meeting you soon.
Loves and Waggs,
Patch xx
